Here is a video (about 15 minutes) from a public EIR hearing from Feb 2011 regarding some of the issues and concerns from neighborhood residents:

And here is another one showing "Mother Nature's gopher control"; a Great Blue Heron finding and having "breakfast" at Beach Chalet Soccer Field (taken from a distance so it's really not disgusting or offensive):

Although Golden Gate Park is a man-made place of nature and not native as were the sand dunes on which it was built upon, it has existed for the last 120+ years and thus has developed it own ecosystem (so to speak) complete with the wildlife that has been attracted to it and currently resides there. On the other hand, I assume that the soccer fields were originally built as a place to play the game and as such, I can see that side of the argument as well. However, one additional question I don't find answer to is whether or not this upgrade of the soccer fields adding the artificial turf and stadium lighting would only be for soccer league use ONLY, or will it still be open to the public who just seek a place to play a friendly "pop-up" game? It would be hard for me to consider the proposed soccer complex as "recreational" if it is not available for general public use.
As Woody's post said, "it's complicated"...
