Goals of Childhood

Goals of Childhood

Having just watched a news story on KTVU, I find myself conflicted. Several kids attended a hearing at SF City Hall about upgrading 4 soccer fields near the Beach Chalet. Seems they want astro-turf and stadium lighting installed to the tune of $14 million tax dollars.

While I really admire and applaud these kid's embracing civil rights and city government I also wonder why kids need such a fancy and expensive place to play? All we ever needed was a ball, a patch of land and another kid to let the games begin. And stadium lights in the Park seem unnatural and useless, given the evening weather conditions at Ocean Beach.
Besides, don't all kids need to be home in time for dinner or has that changed, too?

Am I cynical or are these kids spoiled, expecting a nicer place to play than the 49ers at the tax-payer's expense?

Cheers,
jb
