During WWII airplanes would tow targets, along the coast, for the Ft. Funston, and other military crews, to fire at. I remember seeing the SF area beaches littered with the remains of small sharks, apparently struck by the shells as they fell to the water. Never thought of it 'till just now, hoping that the target tow ropes were nice and long.
Also, as a kid, it was fun to watch the navy (coast guard?) blimps head out, over the beach, on their way to sub patrol. At times the strong west wind would keep the lighter than air craft from completing their appointed rounds. Try as they might, tacking into the wind, there were times when they'd have to retreat to fight another day.
