This last saturday we did the fantastic Fort Funston hike and exploration. The hike down the cliff side to the beach should be considered a mandatory Bay Area destination. Some of the most beautiful vistas and all biking or driving distance from the Outsidelands. The hangliders are fabulous too.
It is always fun to wander the grounds and reminisce about this place and what used to be there. As a child of the 1970s-80s I remember being able to walk through all of Battery Davis, now it is all sealed off. That tunnel used to be a source of constant adventure( and probably danger) for us. Aside from a few plaques with photos of the old guns there is not much left of the military presence at Fort Funston. I am wondering if any WNPers out there actually remember this as a military installation or knew anyone who served at Fort Funston. Hearing those stories would be amazing. I always remember my dad's friend Steve who actually served at the Nike site at Pt. Bonita, his stories really brought the reality of that place to life.
