The phonograph was invented in 1877 by Thomas Edison, the recording being on a wax cylinder, a rather awkward format. A competitor in the recording business, somewhere around the turn of the 20th century, developed the more convenient flat disc, which became the dominant format. The owner of that company, capitalizing on his success, renamed his company The Victor Talking Machine Company, and called his product "Victrola." In 1929 the Radio Corporation of America purchased the Victor company and RCA Victor came into existence. Mr. Edison stopped making cylinder recordings in 1931. In a bit of irony, the General Electric Company, founded by Mr. Edison in 1878, purchased RCA Victor in 1985.
