Steve,
I won't be the only one to tell you this...
One of the early makers of a record player - maybe the first - was the company called RCA Victor. The famous ad for the Victrola, a phonograph with a horn-like speaker that carried the sound showed a dog called "Nipper" in front of the horn with his head cocked to one side and the words, "His master's voice" appearing as part of the ad.
I guess, over the years the 'Victor' part of RCA was dropped.
