In regards to our security gate (for my brother, Joe), I think part of Dad & Mom's decision to have the gate installed was because it was during the time of all the free concerts and peace rallies in Speedway Meadows/Polo Fields and they were concerned with the thought of "hippies" seeking refuge in our tunnel entrance if they roamed through the neighborhood. This could have been in a lot of people's minds especially those who lived closer to "The Park". I seem to remember some mention like this anyway. I have to say that I didn't miss the door-to-door salesmen either, especially since one of them once sprayed me in the face with some Lysol-like spray when I was home sick with a cold when Mom answered the door and mentioned it.
Other mentions: our family's "Photography" when we were kids in the 50's & early 60's was the use of my Dad's Poloroid self developing black & white camera...later to be replaced with my sister's Kodak Instamatic and then my brother's various 35mm cameras and self-built darkroom for developing his (and sometimes mine) photographs.
"Q" (for me) just has to stand for Quintara Mountain...the home of many sore leg muscles over the years of climbing it and skinned knees and bruises trying to skateboard down it.
Vegetables, my Mom liked two (besides potatoes of course) and cooked them often...which is to say maybe once a week. Artichokes and frozen chopped spinach. It wasn't until much later after my Dad started growing vegetables in the backyard that I aquired a taste for any others, but I did always like the "standard"...corn on the cob. I remember many years of Dad asking for "peas and carrots" or "any other" vegetables be cooked at least for him with his dinner...haha
