Jo Anne,
We also got the gate at our house (2100 blk of 28th ave). There was no security reason for it that I can remember but I'll bet my parents saved a lot of money, because it kept all the various door to door salesmen (Fuller Brush - Electrolux - Kirby - Jewell, etc) at street level.
