Just read that ACT has bought the Strand Theater on Market and will be converting it to a 300 seat live theater. I remember the Strand, Embassy, St Francis... all of them... Market Street at night was just ablaze with theater marquees. It was a sight to behold.
I think much of the demise of downtown theaters was the building of BART. They tore off every marquee of every theater when building the subway. They were all supposed to be replaced when it was finished, but, of course, they weren't. It just ruined the atmosphere completely...
Anyway... glad to see the Strand will be running, again.
