This is a bit off the subject but pertinent to quarries and construction practices.
Don't put the family diamond mines on the line for this, but it's my impression that construction companies used a mix of native rock, beach sand and portland cement to pour building foundations.
There were quarries all over town.
I'm not absolutely sure, but I think there's an abandoned one in the park across Kennedy Drive from the Conservatory of Flowers. I believe it has been flooded, turning it into a lake.
The Sunset Towers at 7th. and Lawton are built in a disused quarry as are the residences on Geneva Ave. where L&L Castle Lanes used to be. The homes on Duboce and Church, next to the Mint are set in a former quarry.
There are probably another half dozen or more of which I'm unaware.
