This weekend I did something I'd not done in 40 years...I went to a demonstration, the nature of which I shall spare you all, since I am not bent on disturbing the political leanings of others here in our hood.
What I will share is the sense of hope and community which, for many years, seems to have lost its way home. I wondered how life had become so complex and so polarized. Granted, complexity is sometimes a good thing: Take food and wine for example. Yet who can deny the simple charm and pleasure of Italian Swiss Colony vin rose or the intoxicating smell of burgers sizzling on the grill? Alas, that over-the-fence wave of the spatula and libation-hoisted invitation for our neighbors to come join us seems often as far off as the strife in Darfur.
But I have contracted this glimmer of hope, shining like glowing coals below a string of white marshmallows, which now having turned a golden brown, stand ready to bond Hershey bar and graham cracker into a treat from our past. And we'll endure the sticky mess because, in the final moments, as the coals grow cold and gray, the sweetness will still linger in the corners of our mouths and make us smile.
