My first job lasted a week at Stanley Stationers on Geary at about 18th.
They let me go, saying they were more interested in someone who was more career oriented. I don't think that was the reason, but no charges were ever filed, so whatever I did couldn't have been too bad.
My next one lasted a couple of years at the Union Oil station near Forest Hill Station. I started in 1960 at $1.25 and hour, but, being a diligent lad, shot right up to $1.50. At that time, people were supporting families on not much more. I can't say I liked the job, but I picked up a good work ethic.
