The irony about the fire is that about a decade later schools around the City were being torn down (e.g., Commodore Sloat) or going through serious retrofits (e.g., Paul Revere) to meet the requirements of the Field Act (it was the earthquake law). The kid in trying to burn his homework in the administrator's office may have done the SFUSD a big favor. Jefferson certainly would have had to either be torn down or retrofitted.
