Professor Harold Hill was indeed one of the all time great con men. But to give the devil his due, when he spoke of those golden hours with a cue in his hand, he was extolling the virtues of billiards, not pool.
His opinion of pool, as a game, was that any boob can take and shove a ball in a pocket, and he called that sloth, leading to degradation, the imbibing of alcohol, and a general decline in the morals of the younger generation.
Leave us remember that he was alerting the good citizens of River City to the dangers of having a pool table installed in the local billiard parlor.
Another facet of his philosophy is worthy of respect and admiration:
"I spark, I fizz, for the lady who knows what time it is.
The sadder but wiser girl's the girl for me, the sadder but wiser girl for me."
