There were two or three "coffee houses" (storefronts furnished with very used couches and other junk stuff) on upper Grant, just a block or two from Broadway before Broadway became the big tourist attraction. Must have been in the mid to late '50's. I remember a pizza place on the corner, and then the coffee houses across the street. It was pretty outrageous stuff, certainly outside the box for this innocent teenager! As I remember, it evolved from Bohemian into Beatnik which brought the looky-loos. Then the Hippie thing came later.
